Whitsun begins 50 days after Easter in Berchtesgaden. The Easter holiday season ends with Pentecost and the Church remembers the religious event when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples after the resurrection of Jesus. For the region in the Berchtesgadener Land, this church festival is a traditional event with many customs.

Whitsun festival of the miners

In conservative Bavaria, many traditional whitsun celebrations take place every year at whitsun. A visit to the Berchtesgadener Bergknappen Spring Festival is a must for Berchtesgaden. This festival has been celebrated in the salt mine and in the historic town center for over 500 years. A special highlight is the concert by the Berchtesgaden market band in traditional miners’ robes. In the evening there is then a parade with torches, during which the miners and the band march through the village. On Whit Monday, after a wake-up call with the brass band, a praise and thanksgiving service takes place, which is heralded with a church procession from the salt mine to the collegiate church. The traditional guild symbol of the miners, the mountain almond, must of course not be missing here.
