A special place of remembrance is located above Berchtesgaden: the Obersalzberg, once Adolf Hitler’s retreat and later the second seat of government of the Nazi regime, is now an important place of learning and remembrance. The newly designed permanent exhibition ‘Idyll and Crime’ presents the history of this historic site in an impressive and multi-faceted way.The exhibition shows how the idyllic mountain region became a centre of Nazi power – and also focuses on the fates of the victims. Around 350 exhibits, historical documents, photos and multimedia elements convey an impressive picture of the past. Particularly impressive: the original bunker complex is part of the exhibition and can be visited.

The Obersalzberg Documentation Centre has been in existence since 1999 and is considered one of the central institutions for coming to terms with the Nazi era in Germany. It not only provides historical information about Obersalzberg itself, but also places the events in the broader context of the Nazi dictatorship. Visitors can expect a wide range of activities: guided tours of the exhibition, a media guide (available to borrow or as an app) and an extensive educational programme. Open tours for individual visitors and group tours for up to 20 people are available regularly. A visit is well worth it – not only because of the impressive location, but above all because of the important historical insights that this place offers.
